A free subscription gets you stories.
Once every week—from the annals of a DnD campaign, a work in progress, something for my writing group, or even a published story!
But If You Subscribe You Get Even More:
A monthly creative something
Nonfiction, artwork, music, or something far more strange…
A weekly piece of bloggish writing on breaking in to the publishing industry
The ability to comment on posts and vote in polls
My deepest gratitude (seriously - you’re helping a budding writer write more!!) You are literally making a dream come true.
Someday, when I finally get a book published, I will mention you in my acknowledgements
Your Support Matters - a lot
My short-term goal with asking for money is to make this project cost-neutral. Every month I spend $22 on the software to create my comics. The hardware I use cost another $400 to buy.
Just 15 subscribers for one year generates enough to cover those expenses.
Any money beyond that would help me give And More Slow the time it deserves. I spend about 30 hours per month on this. That’s writing time I could be using for query letters, short stories, reading and editing for friends, or chipping away at bigger projects. Or tutoring. As a tutor I make $60 per hour (that’s literally the lowest my school community lets me charge). If I spend only one-third of that time tutoring, I could be making $600.
The Movie Rental Index
A movie costs $3.99 to rent. This is the index I use to decide if something is worth buying. If I spend $12 this month on Disney+, that’s like renting 3 movies. Do I get 3 movies’ worth of enjoyment out of that service? Yes, so I keep paying.
And More Slow costs $5 per month ($4.17 if you subscribe annually)1. Are weekly comics, essays and fiction plus a bonus piece of creative work, a letter of gratitude with insight into becoming a creative writer and your name in the acknowledgements section worth a little more than 1 movie rental? If so, please subscribe - and thank you. Seriously.
Okay, Here’s My Last Argument
I teach middle schoolers at a private school and make a teacher’s salary. I get by. Your support is patronage - I’m not trying to hold anyone hostage with paywalls or ads; your money goes to support a real person. You are buying art for yourself and others to enjoy.
Still not convinced? Watch this interview with Harlan Ellison, which I hope he got paid for. Thanks for considering.
that’s literally the least Substack permits me to charge
